Kalimantan University Extends Remote Learning After Lecturers' Deaths

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rector of West Kalimantan’s Tanjungpura University, Garuda Wiko, on Sunday announced that two lecturers teaching at the university had died. However, he cannot confirm whether the deaths of Forestry Faculty lecturer Idham and Political Science Faculty Sugito are due to contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19) and that campus management are still waiting for confirmation.
“The entire Tanjungpura University community are grieving,” he said on Sunday afternoon.
However, the university had decided to extend its remote learning activities following this news. The Tanjungpura University previously closed-off its physical attendance studies at the Faculty of Economics facility after one of their lecturers had tested positive for the virus.
Prior to the remote learning period extension, the university intended to start physical attendances on October 26, however due to the unfortunate passing of two of its lecturers, this policy had been extended to October 30th.
Apart from having the university’s hospital be overwhelmed, the rector announced that it is mainly to protect campus employees and students from facing further risks of COVID-19 exposure. This adds to Indonesia’s universities that had forcibly closed its activities due to the coronavirus pandemic.
