TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Other than spreading between people through respiratory droplets or small particles, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can be transmitted through contaminated surfaces.

New Australian research finds that the virus can live for up to 28 days on surfaces, longer than many had anticipated.

As compiled from the Times of India on Thursday, October 22, here are surfaces or objects that may carry the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

1. Windows on public transportation

Some parts of public transportation such as windows made of steel or glass can be the place for the virus to breed as it is often touched by people.

2. Banknotes

The study also reveals that the virus survives on paper and polymer banknotes for 28 days when kept at 20 degrees Celsius, which is roughly room temperature.

3. Mobile phone screens

High contact surface areas such as mobile phone touchscreens can be a carrier of bacterial infections, viruses, and many other germs.

4. The waiting room at medical facilities

Medical facilities have strict cleaning and sanitation standards, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the waiting room is one of the least safe places in hospitals.

5. ATM

ATM can be a risky place to visit in times of pandemic due to its high touch surfaces starting from its buttons, glass screens, to its closed environment.

6. Kitchen appliances made of stainless steel

Albeit the coronavirus may not survive in high heat, stainless steel commonly used for cutlery and kitchen appliances is a potential source of virus infection.

To prevent virus transmission, people are highly recommended to carry out thorough cleaning and sanitation regularly in an effort to minimize the risk.

The best way to protect ourselves from COVID-19 is still washing hands often, social distancing, not touching the face, and wearing a face mask. Besides, make sure to have a good ventilation system at home.
