TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, predicted the coronavirus pandemic may leave 13 million people unemployed due to the weakening economy.

“As we all know by now there are already 7 million open unemployment cases and predictions suggest that it will grow from 5 to 6 million and will total to 13 million,” said the Kadin chair in Wednesday’s virtual discussion.

Citing the records gathered by the Ministry of Finance, Rosan said this year’s economy may contract between 0.6 percent up to 1.7 percent, which will eventually affect a number of aspects such as increased poverty and unemployment.

This contraction has affected 15 sectors in the industry despite some industries continue to grow amidst the coronavirus pandemic, such as agriculture, Rosan stated. In general, Indonesia’s economy from month to month has been improving despite the opposite on the annual basis, based on the PMI index.

The Kadin chairperson predicted Indonesia’s economy in 2021 will hover between 3-4 percent, which is below the government’s target of 4.5-5.5 percent.
