TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the ‘Solidarity Action Committee for Munir,’ Usman Hamid, on Sunday pressed the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) to name the murder case against activist Munir Said Thalib as a severe human rights violation.

During a virtual discussion on October 18, Usman Hamid argues that by doing so would help the completion of the case and would free the case from any expiration date. The vile murder case of Munir, under the Criminal Code (KUHP) will see the case expire by October of 2022.

Apart from that, Usman Hamid argues that the murder suspect cannot be trialed more than once under the ordinary criminal law and that moving the case into the realm of severe himan rights violation will avert from future suspects defending that they had already been trialed.

“Suspects will no longer be able to argue that they had been trialed,” said Hamid. He also said that suspects of severe human rights violations will not be subjected to amnesty and any mitigating evidence in court.

Komnas HAM commissioner Choirul Anam said that they are still processing the request for the Munir murder case to be considered as severe human rights violation.
