TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria confirmed that the provincial government would not send a letter to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to pass on the aspirations of people who rejected the Omnibus Law on Job Creation.

“I think demonstrations are enough as means to deliver [public aspirations] to the central government, the president, the House of Representatives (DPR), and related institutions,” said Riza in the City Hall on Tuesday, October 13. “We allow it (rallies) because it is the rights of Jakartans.”

Previously reported, West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil had written to President Jokowi and the DPR Speaker Puan Maharani to pass on the aspirations of labor unions who were against the new law on Friday, October 9, 2020.

According to Riza, the city administration did not need to send a letter because the West and East Java Governments had already submitted it. “I think we have been represented enough.”

Additionally, Jakarta allowed the public to take to the streets to voice their demands regarding the Omnibus Law. However, he hoped that aspirations could be conveyed well, and people could preserve public facilities.

“We hope there should not be a massive rally. What’s important is their aspirations can be well delivered and of course, it will be heard and deliberated with the central government and DPR,” Riza concluded.
