TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security, Mahfud MD, said the government will form a special investigation team to solve the Intan Jaya, Papua conflict between security forces and local armed criminal groups.

“The government will create a joint investigation team that is hoped to be more objective in digging into the matter and avert from causing controversy,” said Mahfud MD in Thursday’s press conference.

The joint investigation team will also comprise local public figures and academics to assist in the investigation.

Apart from the recent tragedy of the killing of pastor Yeremia Zanambani, there are also two Indonesian armed forces (TNI) members and one civilian who died in the conflict.

However, the most intriguing death was that of the pastor as local authorities claim criminal groups were responsible but Church management insists that the pastor was killed by a TNI member.

Mahfud MD claims the government has anticipated the issue of emerging violence in Papua nearing December 1, which is an important date for local separatist groups with annual recurrences. He also asserts that Indonesia will not let Papua establish independence.
