President Megawati Calls on People to Observe Anti-Drugs Day

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:President Megawati Soekarnoputri has called on people to start a national movement to deal with the problems of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. The campaign, which will begin on Thursday (27/6) and last until July 26, is to be marked by the turning on of vehicles’ headlights between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. “I call on Indonesian people to fight against drug abuse and the illicit trade of drugs in Indonesia,” said the President during the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at the State Palace on Wednesday (26/6). She went on to say that drugs abuse is a serious problem, saying “Almost everyday we hear a report on drugs abuse.” The President also said that Indonesia has to cooperate with international community to handle this problem. “I call on the National Narcotics Board (BNN) to tighten its cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies,” she said. During the celebration where some ministers, chief of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and ambassadors of foreign countries were present, President Megawati presented several awards. The beneficiaries included Sandro Calyari from UNDCP ( United Nation Drug Control Program), Jeanne Mandagi from BNN, Primharyadi (Judge), Taufik Ismail (cultural observer), and the Indonesian Women’s Congress (Kowani).
