TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Home Affairs Ministry holds a meeting with the General Election Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) to deliberate the 2020 Regional Head Elections and efforts to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19 at the ministry’s office in Central Jakarta, Monday, September 7, 2020.
The meeting also highlights the potential emergence of COVID-19 transmission clusters due to the elections. Bawaslu commissioner Fritz Siregar said scores of violations had been detected during the registration process of regional head candidate pairings.
“We could all see how the health protocols were violated during the registration process and we do not want this to recur. We want to be able to hold the regional head elections in 2020 that are safe from COVID-19,” Fritz said in a written statement.
Fritz said the coordination meeting would also touch on several mechanisms that would be remedied and cement the coordination during the elections that involved the National Police and the Public Order Agencies.
“We will also suggest the KPU declare and sign a pact of compliance integrity on the health protocols during the campaign process and the ensuing process,” he said.
