TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Ombudsman Head Teguh Nugroho demanded the Jakarta administration stop the additional sanction for Covid-19 health protocols violators which forces them to lay in a fake coffin. He opined the punitive measure was inappropriate.

“I think using a fake coffin to punish people is improper,” said Teguh in a text message on Sunday, September 6.

Teguh feared such a sanction could even increase the risk of Covid-19 transmission. “Is there no other method that lowers the transmission risk?”

The fake casket, he added, was used by many people who did not wear masks. “The same coffin is used many times, even if it is disinfected, it does not guarantee that there is no Covid-19 transmission,” Teguh said.

As reported earlier, Jakarta officials imposed sanctions to those violating the Transitional Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) orders in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, including asking them to lay in a fake coffin and contemplate their wrongdoings there.

“It aims to raise public awareness that Covid-19 still exists and dangerous,” said Pasar Rebo subdistrict deputy head, Santoso, in Jakarta, Thursday, September 3.
