TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Zita Anjani, deputy of the Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), is puzzled by the plan of Governor Anies Baswedan to reopen cinemas in the capital. She said that there are more important things needed by residents, such as internet access for educational purposes.
"I am confused—why cinemas? Of the thousands of people I met, no one complained about wanting to watch the Box Office," she said in a written statement, Thursday, August 27.
Zita said that what the public needs is an internet connection. She believes it is more important to provide neighborhood Wi-Fi instead of opening movie theaters. Internet connectivity, she argued, can help students undergo the distance learning process (PJJ) in the midst of a pandemic.
She also said that the public wants equal education, meaning that it is accessible by everyone. However, Zita added, there are children in Jakarta who have trouble accessing the internet due to financial reasons.
"They cannot study because they lack access. How can we ignore this social reality? This is breaking my heart," the PAN politician said.
The Jakarta administration is preparing a rule on movie theaters during the pandemic, with Governor Anies Baswedan saying that cinemas will re-open soon.
