Komnas HAM: Tempo.co Hacking a Serious Threat to Democracy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) argued that the recent hacking against Tempo.co can be seen as a serious threat against democracy and basic human rights.
“This has not just become a problem for Tempo Group but it has become a collective problem for those who yearn for a better democratic life in Indonesia and those who highly value human rights,” said Komnas HAM Commissioner Choirul Anam in a text message to Tempo on Friday, August 21.
Moreover, Anam encouraged the national police to help expose the perpetrator behind the hacking of Tempo.co earlier this morning. He believed that hacking attempts would haunt Indonesia’s democracy and human rights if not investigated thoroughly.
The Komnas HAM commissioner hoped what was experienced by Tempo’s digital platform will not happen to other news media outlets in Indonesia and “[They] would hopefully not be affected by this incident,” he said. “I believe Tempo will not be affected by this crime.”
