South Tangerang Divorce Rates Grow Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the South Tangerang religious affairs office, Abdul Rojak, said the divorce rate in this province populated by over 1.7 million people has increased by 10 percent due to three main factors, one of which is the economic factor.
“On average, the first factor is economy,” said Abdul Rojak on Tuesday, August 18.
Moreover, he said the second and third factor driving the divorce rate upwards is issues related to family resilience and weak religious devotion. Despite not revealing the exact number, he gave the average rate of divorce cases normally hovers at 2,500 - 3,000 annually prior to the pandemic.
According to Rojak, the dwindling economy has driven many layoffs in the province and left many without stable sources of income. He noted that this reason alone has sparked many domestic arguments and has led to divorces.
Even though many cases go directly to the district court, the Religious Affairs office also accommodates direct recommendations to the religious affairs court to facilitate these cases.
