TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Banten penitentiary (lapas) announced that 1,039 inmates imprisoned there have declared their willingness to register as volunteers of Indonesia’s COVID-19 candidate vaccine clinical trial.

This declaration was announced and signed by representatives of the inmates before the Banten Deputy Governor Andika Hazrumy during the handover of the independence day inmates remission program at the Class A Cilegon penitentiary held on Monday, August 17.

“For sure I am proud of the readiness shown by the possible COVID-19 candidate vaccine clinical trial volunteers,” said the deputy governor.

Related to the viral spread in the Banten Province, Andika Hazrumy was thankful to see Banten not categorized as the epicenter of the COVID-19 virus. After being ranked third in March, the province is now a yellow zone ranked 14th.

Meanwhile, this year’s independence day remission program be granted to 5,512 inmates and child inmates with 153 receiving immediate release.
