TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo would award 22 health workers who died on duty during COVID-19 pandemic with the service star medals on Thursday, August 13. The presidential spokesman Fadjroel Rachman said the honor would be a form of the country’s condolences and respect.

“The awarding of nine Pratama Service Star and 13 Nararya Service Star for medical workers who died while treating COVID-19 patients is a form of the country’s deep condolences and highest respect for them who were at the front lines of COVID-19 mitigation in Indonesia,” said Fadjroel in a written statement on Thursday, August 13.

He also offered condolences to the families of the fallen workers and their colleagues who were still struggling to treat positive patients. Jokowi reportedly would grant the medals to their representatives.

“This is the first stage that will be followed by the next awarding of service star medals and compensation for fallen health workers,” Fadjroel added.

The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md said the government allocated Rp300 million as the compensation, pledging it would be handed immediately.
