TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said a program related to the elimination of stunting would remain the government's priority amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The stunting eradication program will be our asset for Indonesia Onward in the future,” said the minister in a teleconference on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. Stunting is a growth failure in children due to chronic malnutrition.

Terawan was ordered by President Jokowi to focus on reducing the stunting rate in 10 provinces with the highest prevalence. The provinces are East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), West Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Aceh, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi.

The president targeted a drop in the stunting prevalence to 14 percent by 2024. In 2019, the country’s prevalence of stunting was 27.67 percent.

The Social Affairs Ministry, meanwhile, stated its readiness to synergize the social assistance of COVID-19 handling with the stunting prevention program for children.

“For example in the non-cash food assistance program, we suggest additional milk among other products for pregnant women and early-age children,” said Social Affairs Minister Juliari Batubara.
