TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has decided to cancel four tournaments taking place in East Asia in September for the 2020 season. The BWF made the decision based on the latest pandemic situation that is still quite worrisome in Asia.

The four tournaments that have been canceled are Taipei Open (September 1-6), Korea Open (September 8-13), China Open (September 15-20), and Japan Open (September 22-27).

BWF secretary general Thomas Lund said the decision took into account the health of athletes, spectators, volunteers, and association members.

"We are deeply disappointed to have to cancel tournaments, but feel that the well-being of everyone involved is most important at this time," Lund said.

Lund added that the decision to cancel the tournaments was taken after consultation with relevant hosts. He acknowledged the significant efforts made by member associations in the regions throughout the process.

The BWF, he said, will continue to adjust to changes to ensure that all badminton activities comply with rules and regulations of the World Health Organization (WHO), local health authorities, and international and domestic travel restrictions.
