Indonesia Weekly Crime Rate Up 7.08 Percent, Police Say

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police said that the crime rate had gone up 7.08 percent from week 29 to week 30 of this year. According to the Police Headquarters spokesman Brig. Gen. Awi Setyono, there were 5,282 criminal offenses in week 29. In the following week, the number rose to 5,656.

"There were 374 more cases," Awi said in an online press conference, Tuesday, July 28.

According to Awi, the most frequent offenses are burglary and larceny (592 cases), drug-related crimes (805 cases), motorcycle theft (208 cases), embezzlement (417 cases), and robberies (108 cases).

He said that the police have stationed officers in residential areas and nearby neighborhoods. The police and the armed forces, he said, also hold join patrols.

"The presence of TNI and the police will make people think twice before committing a crime," he said.
