TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Health Ministry has released guidance on childbirth at hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The rule is noted in the circular of the Health Service Directorate General No. HK.02.02/III/2878/2020 on the readiness of referral hospitals in handling maternal and neonatal care with COVID-19,” said the Acting Director-General of Health Service, Abdul Kadir, in a written statement on Monday, July 20.

Abdul explained that labor and delivery of suspected or probable cases were held in COVID-19 referral hospitals. Due to a high number of positive infections, health protocols are required for pregnant women who are also at risk of virus transmission.

“Every pregnant woman who is about to give birth is advised to undergo COVID-19 screening seven days before the estimated due date,” Abdul added.

During the pandemic, COVID-19 referral hospitals are asked to provide maternal and neonatal care while maintaining vigilance of isolation for all patients.

The services include reducing air transmission, such as using delivery chambers for vaginal delivery services, taking medical action in negative pressure operating rooms if available, or conducting airflow modification.

Hospitals are also demanded to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the predetermined standard for health workers providing maternal and neonatal care during the pandemic.
