TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The global tally of Covid-19 cases continues to increase. As of Monday, July 13, 13 million people have been infected with the virus worldwide.

"Over the last five days, there have been one million new cases," Reuters reported, Monday.

In six and a half months, the number of people who died from Covid-19 has reached more than 570,000.

The WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said many countries have implemented the wrong basic health principles to prevent and control the new coronavirus' transmission.

He warned all nations that thing cannot go back to normal anytime soon, if governments ignore preventive measures.

"Let me be blunt, too many countries are headed in the wrong direction, the virus remains public enemy number one," he said from the WHO headquarters in Geneva.

According to Reuters, Latin America becomes the continent with the most cases, accounting for more than half the world’s infections and half the deaths.

The United States is also seeing spikes in new cases despite still being in the first wave of Covid-19. America has more than 3.3 million cases and ace recorded over 135,000 deaths.

Meanwhile, the cities of Melbourne in Australia and the UK's Leicester have implemented a second lockdown. Hong Kong, albeit having relatively low 1,522 cases, plans to tighten social distancing measures again amid growing worries of a third wave.
