TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government on Wednesday held a limited meeting on the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup that was attended by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) chairperson Mochamad Irawan, and a number of state ministries.

The PSSI chair said after the meeting that the president had expressed his hope to see Indonesia’s U-20 football team proceed past the Cup’s preliminaries.

“The president is hoping for the best, not just to pass the preliminaries but also progress as the host nation not by qualification,” said Zainudin in a press conference at the Sports and Youth Ministry headquarters on Wednesday.

Indonesia’s U-20 will face a daunting task to compete with 23 teams representing countries around the globe. Despite President Jokowi’s goal for the U-20 football team that was established in the meeting, the PSSI had actually set their own goal to progress through until the World Cup semifinals.

The U-20 World Cup will be held from May 20 - June 11, 2021, with the country’s U-19 team having two more matches this year to prove itself before performing in the U-20 Cup the following year.
