TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Tanjungpura professor, Thamrin Usman on Tuesday said that the remote learning system (PJJ) currently implemented by schools and academic institutions nationwide is deemed as the best solution amidst an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“The education system remains to be protected from the high risk of COVID-19 infection amidst the current hot topic of the new normal,” said Thamrin Usman on June 16.

The former rector argues that the remote learning system practiced by 94 percent of academic institutions in Indonesia as an interesting and correct decision. He noted that the pattern of the PJJ may not be well-received by students, teachers, and parents based on a plethora of complaints regarding the method.

However, he reminded people that the health and safety aspect of remote learning must be put forth compared to the downsides the system presents.

“There are many challenges in adapting to remote learning, but that is not comparable to a situation where children and teachers contract the coronavirus if they persist to attend school,” said the professor.

As of Monday, June 15, four state-ministries had signed the education implementation guidelines for the 2020/2021 school year mandating 94 percent of schools in Indonesia must continue to conduct studies remotely. Only 6 percent of schools within the safe ‘green zone’ are permitted to attend school physically.
