SOE Ministry Responds to Garuda Indonesia's Pilot Layoffs

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Ministry’s special staffer, Arya Sinulingga, said his office would let flag carrier Garuda Indonesia take policies related to its firm’s efficiency amid the coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic.
The statement was made in response to the state airliner’s recent decision to lay off a number of pilots.
“We leave it to Garuda’s management to calculate the impact of the corona, the consequences on its business, including efficiencies to survive and remain operating,” said Arya in a video conference on Tuesday, June 2.
Arya believed that the airline’s management had many hard choices during the ongoing pandemic. With that in mind, the taken decision must have been through careful considerations.
As reported earlier, Garuda Indonesia CEO Irfan Setiaputra said his side was forced to dismiss several pilots in an attempt to balance its position in the industry’s supply and demand. The decision, he added, was produced after thorough deliberation while concerning workers' rights.
“This is a difficult decision that we must take,” Setiaputra said.
