TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded an 87.44 percent drop in international tourist visits in April 2020 compared to the same period last year. It is also a 66.02 percent drop compared to March 2020.

“The effects of the COVID-19 was felt since February. So, the tourists visiting Indonesia in April 2020 were only left with 160,000,” said BPS head Suhariyanto on Tuesday’s live press coverage.

Out of the latter statistic, he said the visits from international tourists were dominated by those visiting from Timor Leste.

Moreover, the BPS head said that the number of visits from January - April 2020 accumulated to 2.77 million visits, which is a 45.01 percent drop compared to the same period last year in 2019 that totals to 5.03 million visitors. However, that was prior to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit hardest on the tourism industry worldwide.

Average star-rated hotel visitations in Indonesia in April 2020 was 12.67 percent, which is a 41.23 points drop compared to the previous year that scored 53.90 percent. However, the average stay a visitor spends at hotels throughout April 2020 was higher with 1.93 days on average which is a slight increase of 0.10 points compared to April 2019.
