TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Acting Director-General of the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) Hamid Muhammad said the decision on the reopening of schools amid the Covid-19 pandemic is not under the authority of the Education and Culture Ministry.

Hamid reiterated that the Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Makarim will only enact terms and procedures that schools must abide by before carrying out normal learning activities. “The main requirement is it (schools’ location) has to be in green zones,” said Hamid via a teleconference on Thursday, May 28.

The determination of green, yellow, and red zones, meanwhile, is in the hands of the Covid-19 mitigation task force. “So regional administrations cannot one-sidedly [decide to reopen schools] before a decision made by the task force,” Hamid underlined.

He added that Nadiem will announce details of the requirements to reopen schools next week. “Let’s be patient. It will likely be shared by Pak Minister next week.”

Until date, a number of teacher unions rejected the government’s plan to reopen schools during the Covid-19 pandemic. Thousands have signed online petitions on Change.org, demanding President Jokowi and Nadiem Makarim postpone the new school year, which will begin in July.
