TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Airlangga University Hospital in Surabaya, East Java, has temporarily stopped taking referrals of new Covid-19 patients, starting May 26, 2020. The hospital's Covid-19 treatment room is at full capacity, and they are short-staffed.

"UNAIR Hospital's health personnel will be focused on treating patients already being treated," the hospital said in a letter signed by its acting director, deputy director of Medical and Nursing Services, Hamzah, May 25.

The letter also mentions that the hospital's Emergency Room will continue to provide services by implementing a strict triage protocol, and only serve patients with life-threatening conditions.

"The policy will last for 14 days starting May 26, 2020, while we continue to observe ongoing developments," the letter said, adding that changes and developments that occur will be announced later.

Tempo tried contacting UNAIR Hospital's Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Alfian Nur Rasyid, but there has been no response.

Meanwhile, the hospital's Information and Public Relations Center's chief, Suko Widodo, said that they must anticipate the possibility of an increase in new patients -19, thus it needs to make adjustments to ensure service quality.

East Java continues to see new patients of Covid-19. To date, the province has 3,939 confirmed cases.
