TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Thursday, May 21, announced that the tropical cyclone Mangga is forming over the Indian Ocean at 9.8 south latitude and 93.0 east longitude which or 1,220 kilometers southwest of Indonesia’s Bengkulu.

The formation of this cyclone was announced by the Jakarta Tropical Cyclone Warning Center occurred on Thursday morning. As of last night, the cyclone had recorded pressures up to 998 hPa at the storm’s core and created winds up to 35 knots.

BMKG forecasts that cyclone Mangga will gradually move away from Indonesia for the next 24 hours but will certainly cause heavy rain to fall over several Indonesian regions such as West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, South, and East Kalimantan.

The agency’s acting-deputy of meteorology Herizal warned people to expect heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds over the aforementioned regions. He also warned fishermen operating at the regions to take extra precaution as ocean waves are also expected to reach up to three-meters due to the tropical cyclone Mangga.
