TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shocking developments on personal data security breach came on late Thursday, May 21, after Twitter account @underthebreach claims that hackers have managed to breach personal data of 2.3 million Indonesians from the General Elections Commission (KPU) database.

This Twitter account is the same user that reported an alleged personal data breach on Tokopedia’s 91 million users’ account earlier this month.

“The hackers breached the personal information of 2,300,000 Indonesians which include names, addresses, ID numbers, date of birth, and other personal information,” the user tweeted.

The personal data breach is said to have originated from the KPU database since 2013 and hackers threaten to expose the personal information of 200 million more. Other personal data believed to be exposed include citizens' identity numbers (NIK) and NKK.

@underthebreach uploaded a screengrab of a hacker’s forum showing a folder believed to be containing the personal data of Indonesian voters for the 2014 legislative election at the Yogyakarta province. This can be a major compromise on citizens’ safety as both NIK and NKK can be used to register official mobile phone numbers.

The tweet was replied by thousands of responses from Twitter users, which mainly demanded the government’s quick actions and cynicism against the safety of personal information data in Indonesia.
