TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Speaker Lestari Moerdijat on Monday reminded the government to loosen its coronavirus (COVID-19) large-scale social restriction (PSBB) only if the country has provenly passed its epidemic peak.

Her serious warning comes after recent developments that seemingly suggests the government is about to relax its restrictions.

“I’ve noticed from a number of news reports that many are planning to enter a new phase in life implying loosened restrictions post-Eid celebration,” said Lestari Moedjat in her official written statement to ANTARA on Monday.

The MPR deputy reminded that the World Health Organization (WHO) requires countries to be in control of the global pandemic based on calculated epidemiology records before loosening any of its COVID-19 restrictions.

She also said that a government must be able to identify infection clusters and manage to isolate high-risk contacts.

“This begs the question if our country has fulfilled the requirements, especially amidst a rising number of COVID-19 cases,” she said.

Based on the government’s task force records, the Nasdem Party politician is sure that the growth of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia is still fluctuating with an average of 400 - 560 daily cases from May 14 - May 17.
