Satpol PP React to Crowded Supermarket amid Pandemic Restrictions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) announced it will intensify its operations across shopping centers after images of a jam-packed supermarket located in West Jakarta went viral online despite the area being under large-scale social restriction (PSBB) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The packed crowd of visitors in a Meruya supermarket is believed to have happened due to the tradition nearing the ‘lebaran’ or Eid celebration which marks the end of Ramadan.

Head of the area’s Satpol PP, Ivand Sigiro, said on Sunday that the operation will be enforced to make sure that people abide by the COVID-19 health protocols and that they are only out to buy urgent daily needs.

The agency is reportedly intensifying its operations against PSBB violators through social punishments. The violations are mainly because of violations against the protocol to wear face masks.

“We actually have strongly reminded businesses and traders to remain obedient with the COVID-19 protocol such as maintaining safe physical distances, providing hand sanitizers, and wearing face masks,” said Ivand on Sunday.
