Taman Safari Indonesia Welcomes Newborn Elephant Named Covid

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) in Puncak, Bogor, on Tuesday, April 28 welcomed a newborn male Sumatran elephant, which was named Covid in tribute to the situation the calf was born in.
“The calf we named Covid was born from a 46-year old female elephant and a 44-year old elephant dad named Kodir. Both elephants came from Riau,” said a Taman Safari Indonesia zookeeper Sodik in Bogor on Sunday, May 17.
According to the zookeeper, the calf born amidst the COVID-19 pandemic has consistently shown signs of being healthy and is also active around its mother.
The elephant’s state of health comes as fortunate news considering as of now, the Taman Safari Indonesia remains temporarily closed due to the pandemic. Which also sees zoo management forced to perform cost efficiencies in terms of animal care.
The zoo’s director Jansen Manansang openly announced that the Taman Safari Bogor is open to any form of donations which will be used mainly to sustain its animal conservation programs. The arrival of Covid adds to TSI’s elephant population which now has a total of 51.
