TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Minister Johnny Gerald Plate on Friday announced that the number of transactions in e-commerce platforms has grown up by 30 percent during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The same trend is shared by other digital economy sectors.

“We see that the situation presents a plethora of challenges, but on another note, there are many possibilities, especially for those in the digital economy,” said Johnny in a virtual conference on Friday, May 15.

Besides e-commerce, he said, higher digital activities were also evident in the use of applications, particularly those providing health services, which grew by 600 percent compared to those before the pandemic.

The fintech industry also saw a significant growth after fintech transactions across e-commerce platforms grew by 100 percent.

Minister Johnny Gerald Plate also hoped that the 2020 digital economy could be boosted even further and exceed Indonesia’s 2017 digital economy realization that scored USD8 billion, which was followed by USD40 billion in 2019.

He said that the Indonesian digital economy was forecasted to reach Rp113 billion by 2025. He believed that the digital economy would grow even more aggressive considering people were currently advised to remain at home.
