TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), Arifin, said on Thursday, May 14, 2020, that city administrators will impose a sanction against the management of McDonald's Sarinah management for letting a large crowd gathered during the outlet's closure on Sunday, May 10, 2020.

This poses a serious problem as the city has imposed a large-scale social restriction (PSBB) banning such activities in an attempt to break the COVID-19 transmission chain.

"Their activity is considered a serious violation," said Arifin to Tempo on Thursday, May 14, 2020.

Arifin implied that a fine will be handed to the restaurant management in accordance to Jakarta Governor Decree No.41/2020 (Decree), which governs sanctions for violations against the large-scale social restriction (PSBB).

Article 7 paragraph (1) point (b) of the Decree states that restaurant management who does not comply with the protocol to curb the spread of COVID-19 will face administrative fines from IDR 5 million up to IDR 10 million, and temporary closure.

"We will impose fines because the restaurant has been permanently closed," said the Arifin.

The permanent closure of McDonald's Sarinah gained much public attention because the restaurant was the first Indonesian branch of the fast-food franchise that opened in Indonesia back in 1991.
