TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several legislators in the Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR) asked online taxi applicators, Gojek and Grab, to reduce or even eliminate the 20 percent commission from every order transaction made by their driver-partners. This is aimed at helping drivers experiencing lower income due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“For the time being, [applicators] can cut the 20-percent commission from each order taken by online drivers as it burdens them, the daily-income workers,” said Commission VI member Andre Rosiade during a virtual meeting with the two startups on Wednesday, May 6.

As the government’s appeal to stay home following the enforcement of the Large-Scale Social Restriction or PSBB in several regions, Andre opined, people were reluctant to go outside.

Thus, if the commission is impossible to be cut, the operators could at least reduce it to 5 percent, he added.

Andre’s idea was seconded by Commission VI deputy head Aria Bima. According to Aria, the country's decacorn and unicorn should as much as possible provide ease to their driver-partners during the pandemic.

Gojek’s Chief of Public Policy and Government Relations Shinto Nugroho and Grab’s Deputy Head of Public Affairs Tirza R. Munusamy said they could not yet reply to the suggestion and would send a response letter to the legislative soon.
