TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - E-commerce platform company Tokopedia, confirmed that there has been attempts to stole customers' data by a certain party. The rumors were first circulated by social media account @underthebreach through Twitter.
"In relation to the circulating issue, we found attempts to steal data of Tokopedia users. However, Tokopedia ensured that users' important information, such as password, remains protected," said Tokopedia Vice President Corporate Communications Nuraini Razak in a written statement on Saturday, May 2, 2020.
Nevertheless, Nuraini urged customers to replace their password to better protect personal information. Nuraini suggested users to update their password regularly.
Nuraini added that the company always makes the best effort to maintain users' information confidentiality. According to Nuraini, consumers' data is Tokopedia's main priority.
In addition, Nuraini explained that Tokopedia has employed a multi-layer security system, including the use of OTP (one-time-password) that can only be accessed by the account owner.
"Therefore we always educate all users to not give their OTP to anyone for any reason," Nuraini stated.
Following the incident, Nuraini said that the company has conducted an investigation. However, the company's management is yet to announce the results.
Previously, Twitter account @underthebreach mentioned that around 15 million Tokopedia users' information potentially leaked. The users' information was said to be gathered since March 2020 and was circulated in a dark web forum.
