MRT Charges No Rent to Help Station Tenants Survive Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT MRT Jakarta is giving an incentive to MSME tenants at its stations to help them cope with economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The MRT management will not be charging rents to tenants for three months.
MRT Jakarta president director William Sabandar said the company understands that MSMEs are most affected.
"We are giving a relaxation—no rent payments for three months," he said in an online conference Wednesday, April 29.
The policy, he added, could be extended if Jakarta still struggles with the pandemic after those three months.
The rent-free policy only applies to micro, small and medium tenants—not for mid-size shops of franchises like Indomaret and Starbucks.
"Right now, we are only giving full relaxation to MSMEs," he said.
As Jakarta is in a period of large-scale social distancing, MRT Jakarta cuts its operation short to just 12 hours, from 06:00 to 18:00. The company has also deactivate seven stations to support the government policy; keeping only six stations open.
