11 Patient Groups Advised Against Fasting

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia’s Medicine Faculty (FKUI) Dean, Ari Fahrial Syam, on Thursday, April 23, explained the many patient groups that are not recommended to fast. These patient groups are highly recommended to not fast as it would potentially worsen their health condition.

According to the internal medicine specialist, there are 11 groups of patients who should avoid fasting, as follows:

  1. Inpatients with fluid infusion and blood transfusions.
  2. Patients with acute infections such as severe strep throat, high fever, acute diarrhea, pneumonia, and other infections that cause a high fever. “This also applies to COVID-19 patients,” said Ari.
  3. Patients with migraine or vertigo that could worsen without eating or drinking.
  4. Patients with respiratory problems.
  5. Heart failure patients.
  6. Patients who show symptoms of severe stomach ulcers.
  7. Cancer patients under treatment programs.
  8. Patients suffering from advanced chronic liver disorders such as Hepatitis B or C.
  9. Patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing peritoneal dialysis.
  10. Patients with diabetes with a high amount of insulin need.
  11. Elderly patients that suffer from Alzheimer’s.
