TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia’s center for political studies director, Aditya Perdana, predicts that Gerindra Party Chairman Prabowo Subianto made a public video appearance defending President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo due to the pressure the government is facing.

He argues that the government’s handling of the coronavirus (COVID-19) is seen in a negative light from members of the public.

“My guess is that public pressure exists,” said Aditya Perdana today.

He also explained that Prabowo’s action is commonplace as he is part of the government coalition and that Prabowo Subianto’s speech is to deny the doubts against the government that has arisen amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

“It might be possible that the government needs a figure outside of Pak Jokowi, that is part of the government, but is needed to back him up. Which is why I think Pak Prabowo appeared in public,” said Perdana.

The video of Prabowo Subianto was posted from his Twitter account on Thursday, April 23, on which he also asserts that the government would never make decisions that would eventually harm its own people and encouraged people to unite in facing the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
