FAO Warns COVID-19 Pandemic Can Cause Global Food Crisis

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo demanded his ministers to maintain the food supply in Indonesia amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Moreover, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had warned that the pandemic could provoke food shortages around the world.
“We underline the warning that the COVID-19 pandemic can provoke global food shortages or food crisis,” said the President when opening a limited meeting on the COVID-19 task force reports via video conference on Monday, April 13.
He asked Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian to remind regional heads of maintaining the supply of basic commodities.
Besides, regional heads must create predictions on the supply so that the government could ensure there will be no good scarcity and the prices remain affordable.
The state head further demanded the supply and prices of staple goods to be ensured. The food stocks were also expected to not only be calculated from the current productions.
“Perhaps, the current harvest is good, but supervise the harvest of the second plantings in August and September in detail, so that it will not hamper the supply chain or distribution of existing food,” Jokowi remarked.
