Police: Crime Rate Dropping during COVID-19 Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) explained that the national crime rate has dropped significantly during the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Alhamdulillah (All praise to God), everything is conducive," said Chief of Public Information at the Public Relations Division of the Indonesian Police Headquarters, Senior Commissioner Asep Adi Saputra, when confirmed on Thursday, April 9, 2020.

Asep noted that 4,197 crime cases in total occured in the 13th week of the COVID-19 outbreak. While on the 14th week, there were only 3,743 cases; a 11.03 percent decrease in crime rates.

More specifically, in terms of criminal offense, 301 cases were recorded on the 13th week. On the other hand, only 139 cases occurred in the 14th week; a 53.82 drop in criminal offense.

Continuing on, in terms of Security and Public Order (Kamtibmas), 69 cases were recorded on the 13th week, while only 45 cases occurred in the 14th week; a 34.78 percent drop in public disturbances.

In regards to crimes against medical supplies, the police apprehended 18 cases. The modes of crime include monopolizing the price, hoarding of medical supplies, disrupting distribution channels, as well as producing and distributing Personal Protective Equipments (PPE) without distribution permits.

"Of the 18 cases there were 33 suspects, but only 2 of the suspects were detained," said Asep.

The suspects are now subject to legal sanctions according to Trade Law Number 7 of 2014 and Health Law Number 36 of 2009.
