TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly on Wednesday claims that due to the quick response from officials implementing strict health protocol, there have yet been any prisoners to this day that has contracted the coronavirus (COVID-19).

“We pray that no one has been exposed [to the virus] as we have closed-off the entrance gates,” said Yasonna Laoly in the House of Representatives (DPR) law commission hearing today, April 1.

Yasonna explained that the ministry understands the current situation looming over penitentiaries across the country and acknowledges that they are over capacity. This situation further increases the risk of dire contamination if the outbreak does spread in Indonesian prisons.

“We continue to disinfect each and every of the penitentiaries in Indonesia,” said Yasonna.

The strict health and safety protocol adopted, according to Yasonna, includes physical restrictions for inmate family visits which is replaced by virtual visits. Prison employees are also subjected to numerous health protocols prior to entering and leaving jail facilities.

“We also gradually let prisoners sunbathe in outdoor facilities,” said the Law and Human Rights Minister.
