TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wearing a face mask in front of the public for the first time, President Joko ”Jokowi” Widodo on Monday personally monitored the renovation at the Wisma Atlet Kemayoran (Kemayoran Athletes Village) that is being converted into an emergency coronavirus (COVID-19) hospital.
His visit to the future hospital meant to handle victims of the outbreak that first spread in China’s province of Wuhan was accompanied by SOEs Minister Erick Thohir and head of the Indonesian COVID-19 task force, Doni Monardo.
Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto was not present in the president’s entourage that monitored four of the facility’s towers.
The athletes’ dorm facility conversion into a hospital was previously announced by Terawan. This facility is meant to accommodate coronavirus patients with mild symptoms, which in turn is designed to give more leverage for the limited number of doctors tasked at appointed COVID-19 hospitals to treat severe positive cases.
”Hospitals will conduct the selection process on who would be treated at the Wisma Atlet. As for medical workers, I have checked and they are all prepared,” said Terawan in a written statement on Sunday.
The government has converted 4 out of 10 towers to become a COVID-19 hospital, specifically tower 1, 3, 6, and 7, which are all within the facility’s Block D10.
The Wisma Atlet Kemayoran’s Tower 6 will be able to accommodate a total of 1,750 patients spread across 650 rooms. While Tower 7 can accommodate 2,458 patients across 886 rooms, and Tower 1 can accommodate 1,750 patients across 650 rooms.
As of March 22, Indonesia recorded 514 COVID-19 cases with 29 recoveries and 48 deaths.
