Indonesia Records Highest COVID-19 Death Toll in Southeast Asia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia announced on Wednesday, March 19 a significant increase in the number of coronavirus disease or COVID-19 cases to 227. Besides, the number of death cases also climbed from 5 on Tuesday to 19 people.

A national spokesperson for the coronavirus mitigation, Achmad Yurianto, admitted the number of the virus patients in the country was rising, and that will be seen in the next few days.

"We will see a rising number [of confirmed cases]. Hopefully, it will not occur too long," Yurianto said at the BNPB Office, East Jakarta, Wednesday, March 18.

The mortality rate of the virus contagion in Indonesia is also the worst among Southeast Asia countries. Indonesia is currently ranked 3rd in Southeast Asia for the highest number of positive cases, under Malaysia and Singapore with a total of 790 and 313 cases respectively.

However, Malaysia only recorded two death toll, while Singapore has no fatality report so far.

Meanwhile, Indonesia recorded 19 death toll and only eleven patients were declared cured out of 227 cases. By means, fatality rate by COVID-19 in the country reached 8.37 percent, followed by the Philippines with 17 death toll out of 202 cases and Thailand with 1 fatality out of 212 cases.
