TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malaysian Health Ministry issued a ban on hold wedding receptions, prayers, wakes, and other types of festivities for the next two weeks. The ban is in force from March 18 to March 31, 2020.

The ministry sent warnings through the Telegram messenger app, reminding people that all types of receptions, celebrations or gatherings of any kind are not allowed.

"All of those are categorized as social gatherings," wrote the Ministry as quoted from asiaone.com.

The statement also included a law on the provisions for preventing and controlling infectious diseases. That way, indirectly, it is saying that anyone who violates the prohibition could face criminal charges.

The Ministry said that those who ignored the government's efforts could face up to two years in prison, pay fines, or both.

Since December 2019, the SARS-Cov-2 virus has spread to 163 countries. It is estimated that more than 197,000 people have been infected with COVID-19, of which 7,900 died and more than 81,000 recovered.
