TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab temporarily halted weekly and monthly general events usually held at its headquarters in Petamburan, Central Jakarta and Megamendung, Bogor Regency. The decision was made as an effort to prevent the coronavirus infection or known as COVID-19 from further spreading in Indonesia.

"As instructed by Habib Rizieq, all routine and general events at the sharia headquarters and the DPP (central board office), both in Jakarta and Megamendung will be temporarily closed until the situation returns to normal," said the FPI Secretary-General Munarman when contacted on Wednesday, March 18.

Munarman explained that his side also temporarily suspended all general assemblies and grand tablighs in each area exposed to the virus or indicated to be exposed. The agenda suspension would be carried out until the situation is considered normal, he added.

The Islamic group further appealed to all of its congregants and Muslims to conduct self-quarantine and perform prayers more diligently so that the outbreak could soon be overcome.

The FPI also called on its management to educate the public and disseminate ways to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, both by praying and complying to trusted medical instructions. "Don't be afraid or worry too much, but we must endeavor and have faith," Munarman said, quoting Rizieq Shihab's instructions.
