TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One hospital taking in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Indonesia is reportedly experiencing a shortage of personal protective equipment (APD) amid the virus outbreak. Some hospitals that have sufficient supply have even decided to limit its use in anticipation of a prolonged pandemic. This includes the use of medical face masks.

This was revealed in both the official statement released by Airlangga University (Unair) Hospital in Surabaya and medical staff who shared their stories on social media platforms.

Unair Hospital president-director Nasronudin had even requested the local government’s health agency to supply them with additional personal protective equipment as the hospital is starting to experience a shortage amid treating patients under monitoring (PDP) and people under monitoring (ODP) in terms of COVID-19.

Nasronudin also called out for extra help from other sources such as the National Mitigation Agency (BPNB), the Governor’s office, and universities. He fears that the shortage of enough protective equipment will expose his medical workers to health risks and possibly contracting COVID-19.

“The supply of personal protective equipment for medical workers who are treating patients under monitoring at the Unair Hospital is only enough for the next 3-4 days,” said Nasronudin on Monday. “We are anticipating the potential of a sudden burst in patients. We don’t want to see a situation where our medical workers become a [coronavirus] victim due to treating [those who have contracted it].”
