TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said he would gather state-ministers and the head of state-agencies under his coordinating ministry in talks of the security in Papua.
“I will invite the national police chief, attorney general, armed forces (TNI), and every state ministry or agency,” said Mahfud MD on Monday, March 9.
His announcement comes after a shooting broke out at Tembagapura which was committed by local Papua armed group that unfortunately killed one TNI personnel, which Mahfud was not keen to disclose detailed information.
Joint personnel from the TNI and National Police were attacked by the armed group in the highlands of Papua’s Timika region several days back. This incident caused residents of four villages in the area to seek refuge.
Papua Police Chief Insp. General Paulus Waterpauw said there are roughly 900 residents taking refuge which mostly consist of women and children who fear for their lives and requests to be evacuated to Timika. Indonesian authorities complied with the requests and evacuated the villagers.
