TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) has reportedly mobilized a team tasked to disinfect mosques in Jakarta in an attempt to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), with slum areas being top priority.

“Slum areas are more prone to the spread of the virus,” said DMI coordinator Wandi Sobari on Friday, March 6.

Despite not having the complete data on mosque population across the city, DMI plans to disinfect mosques with high number visitations such as mosques inside shopping centers. As of today, DMI has sprayed disinfectants at the Hablul Mustaqin mosque in Gambir, Central Jakarta.

Previously reported, DMI issued a circular that was signed by Jusuf Kalla calling for communities to maintain the sanitation of mosques and musholla to prevent the spread of the Wuhan Virus.

Disinfecting public spaces have been intensified especially after President Jokowi on Monday, March 2, announced Indonesia’s first confirmed coronavirus cases. The two coronavirus patients are being treated at the RSPI Sulianti Saroso in North Jakarta.
