TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) said it would still proceed with its plans to hold the 2020 Indonesia Open on July 16-21 amid growing coronavirus fears.

PBSI sec-gen Achmad Budiharto said he would send a letter to the Youth and Sports Ministry to ask for confirmation and directions regarding athletes’ security and safety affairs.

“Hopefully we can coordinate and offer assistance,” he said at Sheraton Gandaria City Hotel in Jakarta, March 2, 2020.

Achmad said the committee of the 2020 Indonesia Open would keep a close watch on all athletes from China and other coronavirus-stricken countries.

“We will cooperate with other departments in the country to get assurance and security for everybody, not only for the athletes, but the spectators as well,” he said.

Earlier, two European badminton tournaments slated for March—the 2020 German Open and the 2020 Polish Open—were suspended over coronavirus outbreaks.
