TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U.S. digital company, Google, donates US$1 million or around Rp13.6 billion for Bebras Indonesia, a non-profit educational organization. The donation will be used to fund the training of computational thinking skills for 22,000 teachers in 22 cities in Indonesia.

"Preparing Indonesia for the future of the digital global economy is not only the government's responsibility but also all parties' responsibility," said Managing Director of Google Indonesia, Randy Yusuf, in a statement in Jakarta, Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

This contribution is channeled through the company's philanthropic organization, Google.org. With the funding, Bebras will train 2 million students for two years. They will be taught to think critically and to solve difficult problems, so they are not merely memorizing.

Last year, Google Indonesia and Bebras conducted free training in Bandung and Yogyakarta. A total of 140 teachers and 5,000 students participated in the training.

Bebras Indonesia chief Inggriani Liem said that to be a skilled, good and ethical user of technology is not enough. "Children's computational thinking skills need to be developed since early ages so that one day they can be creators of digital products," Liem said.
