Mahfud MD Unaware of Komnas HAM's Report on Paniai Shootings

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Human Rights Mahfud MD claims he has not received the report from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) regarding the Paniai incident in Papua on December 7-8, 2014, that saw four civilians shot and stabbed.
Mahfud MD also refrains from commenting on the case that the Komnas HAM deemed a “major human rights violation” on Saturday last week. The human rights watchdog strongly suspects the military and police personnel are behind the incident, as stipulated in the group’s plenary meeting.
“The Komnas HAM report has yet arrived. I was informed about it through newspaper reports. I shouldn’t comment on a media report, should I?” said the Minister at the Presidential Office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
However, he urges the human rights commission to send him the findings; “Send in the letter.”
The conclusion of the Komnas HAM plenary was based on an investigation by an ad hoc team that looked into the Paniai shootings based on Law No.26/2000 regarding human rights court. The team had worked on the case from 2015 until 2020.
